The Properties of Lavender Essential Oil

We will be featuring specific essential oils on our blog so you can find out more about their health-giving properties. One of the most popular and well known essential oils, and also one of the most powerful is Lavender. The oil is made from the flowers of the plant and is usually extracted via steam distillation. It is neither toxic nor irritating, probably the only essential oil you should use, neat, on your skin.

Lavender is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, anti-depressant, sedative and de-toxifier! So if you only have one bottle of essential oil in your house, it should be Lavender. Use a drop to treat burns and scalds and prevent scarring. Put a drop on your pillow at night to help you get to sleep, or in a warm bath to help you relax and unwind after a busy day. We recently lost our beloved older dog, Biff, which was very hard, and during the first few weeks I found that I needed the uplifting effect of Lavender.

Now we have a new addition: Hobbs, our new puppy. I’m putting a little drop on his bed to help him settle and calm at night and me as well! Always remember though, when using essential oils with dogs that they have an ultra sensitive sense of smell and so use tiny amounts.

So … Lavender is a good all rounder useful for treating all conditions as well as relaxing and balancing the whole body.
